History

A Spanish explorer named the peninsula across from Angel Island Punta de Tiburon, or point of sharks, in 1775. Local Miwok tribes also knew the area to be the territory of leopard sharks.

Early landowner John Reed and his son in law, Civil War veteran and famous embalmer, Benjamin Lyford made plans for the area, but most of them went unrealized until the Northwestern Pacific Railroad came to the area in 1882 and made Tiburon a major connection point between the peninsula, San Francisco, and Richmond. The railroad would also bring other industries to the town, with canneries and ship demolition operations bringing new jobs and opportunities to the area.

Because of disputes between powerful large landowners and residents, Tiburon did not become officially incorporated until 1964.
