History
Like much of Marin County, Sausalito owes much of its early settlement to the English-born, Mexican citizen, William Richardson. Sausalito for much of its early history was in the strange position of being both San Francisco’s nearest neighbor, only two miles away at one point, but also isolated. It took almost a half hour to sail across the strait, and a wagon had to travel almost 100 miles around the bay, even though you could see Sausalito from downtown San Francisco streets. As a result, most of the early residents of the small Sausalito community were either commercial fisherman or young, wealthy yachting enthusiasts. Today, the influence of the sea can still be felt as evidenced by the Sausalito, CA real estate that faces the Bay.
Sausalito was incorporated in 1893 and was often used a destination for smugglers, especially rum runners during Prohibition. Once the Golden Gate Bridge opened, Sausalito became more connected with San Francisco but retained its small size and unique outlook. Today, Sausalito is a destination for sightseers and has regular ferry service to some of the areas favorite attractions, including Angel Island and water tours of the Golden Gate Bridge.
