History

San Anselmo has always been a place people have wanted to retreat to. The native Miwok would fish in the San Anselmo Creek and walk among the beautiful dense oak covered foothills.

A Mexican land grant turned the area into farmland, and it stayed that way until the railroad arrived in 1874. As part of the line that linked Sausalito, Tomales, and Cazadero, San Anselmo became a junction town bringing in merchants and new industries.

San Anselmo got its first post office in 1892 and incorporated in 1907. The railroad left in 1941, closing when it was unable to compete with automobiles and the new Golden Gate Bridge for ease of transport.
