History
Ross was officially incorporated as a city in 1908. But it had been a community long before then. The area was originally known and Rancho Punta de Quentin. James Ross, a Scot, who had immigrated to San Francisco via Australia, bought the property for $50,000 in 1857. He had made his fortune as wholesale liquor magnate.
When Ross died in 1862, his wife was forced to sell off much of the original land to pay out Ross’s daughters their share of the inheritance. The 296 acres she didn’t sell moved on to become the town of Ross.
One of the first actions of the newly formed town council in 1908 was to make it illegal to cut down any trees without the permission of the town. Modern visitors and residents enjoy a uniquely beautiful canopy thanks to those early efforts.
People
Ross has a population of 2,401 and an average income of $171,250. Notable past residents include Huey Lewis and Julia Child. Most of the residents live in large, luxurious country estates. During the early years of Ross, many of the wealthy San Franciscans built large vacation houses in Ross. These mansions have been well preserved and are still lived in today.

Ross School is for children from Kindergarten to 8th grade and is one of the highest ranking schools in California.
High School students mostly attend either Redwood High School, one of the highest ranked schools in the nation for test scores, graduation rates and college acceptances, or Branson School, a private college preparatory school where almost 25% of the graduating class were National Merit Scholars.
