History
The Novato area was once home to three major Miwok tribe villages. Mexican land grants beginning in 1839 eventually brought settlers that pushed the indigenous people out of their villages. Some of the pioneers in the area including Joseph Sweetser and Francis De Long planted orchards and vineyards in the rich soil.
Development was slow in Novato. The first post office opened in 1856 but was closed down just four years later. A new post office wouldn’t be opened for thirty years.
The first school was opened in 1859. The town was mostly centered on Novato Creek until the railroad came through in 1879 and connected the area to Sonoma County and San Rafael. Progress slowly continued up through the Great Depression and World War II. Once the War ended, Novato began to grow rapidly. Because of an absence of regulations and laws, much of the growth was sprawling and unplanned. To gain some control over the town’s development, it was formally incorporated in 1960. Today Novato, CA real estate is a competitive market.
Many historical buildings from the 1800’s are still in use in Novato today.
