History

In 1836, John Reed built the first saw mill in what would become Mill Valley. His mill was on the banks of Cascade Creek, what is now Old Mill Park. After a series of business losses, corporate wrangling, and auctions, the area eventually came under the control of the Tamalpais Land and Water Company. Timber continued to be one the areas biggest money makers and families slowly moved in to clear land and build mills, eventually forming the town of Mill Valley in 1900. Just a few years after incorporation, the famous Dipsea race was first held. The oldest cross-country race in the United States, this 7.5-mile trail race extends from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach.
