History
Charles W. Wright originally laid out Larkspur as a separate community from San Rafael in 1887. The town gained its first post office in 1891 and was incorporated in 1908.
In 1909, the highway came through, running along Magnolia Avenue. The highway was later largely replaced by the interstate freeway system, but Larkspur’s Magnolia Avenue has been preserved and looks much the same as it has for generations. Magnolia Avenue was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because it preserves the way many small Californian towns looked at the turn of the century. Everything from the Art Deco Lark Theater to the false store fronts along the road, make walking in the historic downtown like stepping into a time machine.
Larkspur added the Larkspur Landing in the 1970’s, giving the town fast ferry service to San Francisco’s Financial District. During the baseball season, you can also catch a direct ferry to see the Giants play in their ballpark by the Bay.
