History
The Miwok tribe originally occupied the land for Kentfield, but little evidence suggests they had any lasting settlements in the current city limits. The land was part of a land grant obtained by James Ross in 1857. In 1871 Albert Emmet Kent bought the land from Ross’s estate and built his sprawling estate that was later called Tamalpais. Kent’s son William Kent became a U.S. Congressman and was instrumental in protecting Muir Woods.
The town was known as Kent in the 1890’s. When it received a post office in 1905, it changed its name to Kentfield. It remains an unincorporated community in Marin County.
People
Kentfield has a population of around 6,500 and a median income of $154,000. Homes for sale in Kentfield are in high demand. Many of the area residents are active civically and serve on boards for many different philanthropic organizations throughout not only Marin County but also the whole Bay Area.
The average age in Kentfield is 47, and many families are located in the small town and enjoy access to some of the best schools in both the state of California and the entire nation.
Schools
Several California Distinguished schools including A.G. Bacich Elementary, Kent Middle School, and the nationally ranked Redwood High School in nearby Larkspur serve students in Kentfield. Redwood High School is regularly mentioned as one of the nest schools in the nation and often ranks among the top schools in almost every measure, including test scores, and the percentage of students who gone on to college.
Many students in Kentfield also attend private schools such as the well-regarded Marin Catholic High School, a college prep coed school.
The main campus for Marin College is also in Kentfield. Marin College has a nationally regarded theater program and has the highest junior college transfer rate to Juilliard in the state.
