Real Estate

The main attraction for most when looking for homes in Inverness is finding a place that is near the ocean and away from the crowded cities in the rest of the Bay Area. Inverness real estate has its share of both humble and breathtaking offerings. Like any beach town, some of the most impressive homes also have the most impressive views of the oceans.

Local controls keep the area from being over developed. Since many families stay here for generations, real estate can be in short supply. But, when a buying opportunity dies arise it never lasts long. Investing in Inverness real estate usually isn’t cheap, but it is almost always worth it.

History

James Shafter was a consummate politician who eventually made his way to California from his native Vermont. His parents were from Scotland, and he carried a love of his ancestral homeland with him everywhere he went. Through a series of deals and maneuverings, Shafter ended up with almost all of the Point Reyes peninsula. He founded a small settlement he named Inverness after his beloved Scotland.

From the start, Inverness was meant as a summer resort. In the 1890’s people fled Oakland and San Francisco in the summer to come and relax along the shore in Inverness. After the great quake in 1906, many quit San Francisco permanently and came to Inverness, unaware they were still right on top of the San Andreas Fault.

The area never developed any major industry other than tourism, though a few fishing boats are found at the marina.

People

Only about 1,300 people line in Inverness year round. During the summer, many tourists come and stay at some of the beach homes or briefly at one of the inns. But, it never seems to be crowded. Many of the residents here have been here for generations. Descendants of James Shafter still live here. Some families line the same homes that were built by their ancestors who originally settled the area. Among the full timers, you also find heirs to fortunes made long before things like IPO’s and tech startups had been invented.

The residents here hold onto their traditions. Every year there are swim lessons at Shell Beach. Every year the regular calendar of sailing races is held. While Inverness, CA real estate isn’t plentiful, it is stunning.

Schools

Inverness is part of the Shoreline Unified School District. The district has three elementary schools, including Inverness Elementary, and Tomales High School. The schools all boast small class sizes and rigorous academics.
