History
Member of the costal Miwok tribe came to the area now known as Greenbrae for thousands of years every summer and winter to pick from the plentiful berries that grew along the rolling green hills. The area was part of the Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Cooper that later fell into the hands of area pioneer James Ross.
Ross cleared much of the timber from the land, but did little else to the area. The land changed hands several times after Ross’s death in 1862. Eventually, it was purchased by the Archbishop of San Francisco, Patrick William Riordan in 1890 and was used as a dairy farm for the next 50 years.
After the dairy left, Greenbrae slowly developed, following the path if its neighbors, especially Larkspur.
