History
Lord Charles S. Fairfax was given the land that would become the city as a wedding present by his childhood friend and longtime Marin County resident Dr. Alfred Taliaferro. Fairfax had come to California from Scotland for the excitement of the gold rush. While he never made much of an impact with his mining activities he was active in local politics, serving as president of the State Assembly. The last political dues took place on Lord Fairfax’s estate. He tried to talk the two men out of it, but in 1861 Daniel Showalter shot and killed Charles W. Piercy.
The community of Fairfax gradually took shape, getting its own school district in 1876, a post office in 1910, and in 1917 when the Alpine Dam was built, getting a railway. Fairfax was incorporated in 1931.
