History
Natives from the Miwok tribes originally used the land the town sits on as a base for clamming in Tomales Bay. Early settler Tom Woods came here in the 1830’s and would trade the Tomales Bay abalone his Miwok workers had gathered to French merchant ships for brandy.
In the 1880’s the clams attracted an Irishman George Dillon. He built a hotel and dining room near the beautiful mile long sandy beach that would later bear his name. He would entertain tourists traveling up the coast to see the redwoods. He also ran a stagecoach that would whisk passengers getting from 4 miles inland at the North Pacific Railroad stop in Tomas to his dining room and beach to help them get some fresh ocean air.
Dillon eventually sold out to the Keegan family in the early 1900’s, with the understanding that the beach would always be called Dillon Beach. The Keegans leased the hotel the Lawson family in the 1920’s.
The Lawsons would take over the hotel and move in more family. Soon the Lawsons were marketing Dillon Beach as the “family playground of marvelous Marin”. Tourists came, and more beach houses were built. The family prospered and eventually opened up a resort, which became Lawson’s Landing, which is still owned and operated by the Lawson family.
