History

The land now known as Corte Madera and its majestic redwoods, were part of the Mexican land grant given to John Reed in the 1830’s. Reed wasted little time in bringing the timber industry to the area, and some of the wood harvests here was used in the construction of the Presidio in San Francisco.

The Gold Rush and the railroad brought steady growth to the town. The first post office opened in 1878 and the town incorporated in 1916. Eventually the railroad and much of the timber industry left the town, and it slowly shrunk in population until it stabilized at its current numbers.

Corte Madera is “twin cities” with nearby Larkspur, sharing law enforcement and other resources with their neighbor.

People

Corte Madera is home to 9,200 people and has a median income of $91,933. Corte Madera has a long tradition of civic involvement and interest in local political issues and concerns. Much of the recent focus of the town has been to create a sustainable environment where generations to come will be able to enjoy the unspoiled nature that surrounds the town.

Schools
