The first school was opened in 1859. The town was mostly centered on Novato Creek until the railroad came through in 1879 and connected the area to Sonoma County and San Rafael. Progress slowly continued up through the Great Depression and World War II. Once the War ended, Novato began to grow rapidly. Because of an absence of regulations and laws, much of the growth was sprawling and unplanned. To gain some control over the town’s development, it was formally incorporated in 1960.
