Real Estate

In can be tough to find homes for sale in Bolinas because of the many strict measures to keep development sustainable and limited. There are empty lots originally slated for development in the 1970’s on the Big Mesa that are still vacant. But, the Bolinas real estate that does become available is gorgeous. The homes offer unforgettable natural views and reflect the resident’s commitment to sustainability and living in harmony. Living in Bolinas is an entire way of life, and the high prices of Bolinas real estate reflect how desirable that lifestyle is.

History

For much of the area’s early history self-sufficient tribes lived in the scenic wonderland. Early Spanish Californians eventually moved in, but they also mostly lived off the land, albeit with their farms and ranches. The Gold Rush brought the village to life. The area was perfect for large timber harvests that fed the booming towns all along the coast and helped construct mines all over the area. Eventually, the Gold Rush ended, and most of the people left. But, many of the buildings remain in use in Bolinas, including the saloon that has been in continuous business since 1850.

The During the 1960’s and 1970’s residents and passionate activists prevented Bolinas and the Bolinas Lagoon from becoming development projects. They moved to protect the native birds and scrubbed plans for a four-lane highway and multi-million dollar luxury resort development. Bolinas, CA real estate is a rarity. Local laws and regulations make new development scarce and few people who live in Bolinas ever find a reason to leave.

People

Bolinas has a population of around 1,600. It has more than its fair share of artists, writers, and entrepreneurs. Something about the area seems to call to these creative people who quickly become passionate about the little town and keeping it safe from being spoiled by tourists and developers.

Schools

Bolinas is part of the Bolinas-Stinson School District. Students in the small district in grades kindergarten through second grade attend Stinson Beach School and grades three through eight attend Bolinas School. Both schools have excellent academic reputations. Older students usually attend Mount Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, one of California’s best high schools.
